Here is the thing. It is scary to overcome the fears that we make up in our own mind. Most times the fear of doing the thing is scarier than the thing itself.
This is what happened to me this morning. It was just after sunrise I decided to take a swim in the ocean because I knew that the healing powers of the saltwater would release me from the swelling that I had from the day before. So I walked up to the beach and stood on the sand looking at the water.
My first hesitation came about where to put my towel, on the chairs… near the house or close to the water since I assumed I would be freezing when I came out of the waves. I got over that and left the towel on the chairs.
Next, I got to the edge of the waves and had to decide whether to run into the waves, all in at once, or let my body get used to the cold one body part at a time, feet, calves, knees, etc. I have done both before and I know I am successful either way. What I know is that it takes way more talking to myself when I do it one body part at a time.
The ocean grabs my feet with a wave and honestly, the water is not shockingly cold so that is a good sign. But it is cold enough that I did have to remember, what did I come here to do this morning? Right the swelling in my body that I want to diminish. This is important enough for me to get into the ocean now.
So I ran into the waves and it felt great. Not freezing. Like I had been telling myself for the last 15 minutes. Refreshing. It felt good. As I gave myself over to the water, totally surrendering, floating with my head back, arms in a T-shape, belly up, and legs relaxed. I felt all the throbbing stop because the healing began. The saltwater was doing its job. As I floated, I looked up at the sky feeling relaxed and grateful that I got into the ocean.
This is how healing happens! We have to overcome our fears.
We have to overcome those voices in our heads that tell us it is too scary to change what we have been doing. We have to overcome the fear that whatever new thing we are asked to do probably won’t work.
OR worse yet, we do not have the courage to run towards the thing that scares us to get to the other side where health lies waiting for us.
We are not different. For me, I had a fear of cold water but for you, it might be a fear of changing your diet or getting up to exercise, or not knowing how to get off your medication safely. It could be lacking the self-confidence to stick to a program to help you get better. Or it could be some other voice in your head telling you, you can’t do whatever “it” is.
Overcoming your fears requires that you have the knowledge and education about what to do, and a mentor to give you the right thoughts to overcome your fears.
As a naturopathic doctor I know the healing powers of saltwater and hydrotherapy. It is my knowledge that inspired me to go to the beach. I also have a coach, mentor who loves to share the healing power of cold dunks to stimulate healing. It was his words that played into my decision to run into the ocean instead of inching in.
One of the reasons my team and I are so successful at helping people achieve their health goals is because we coach and train you to get past the limiting fears, so you too, can get to your healing and your best life.
