The quality, not the longevity, of one’s life is what is important.

Yesterday, we had a holiday to reflect on the essence of Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy.

One of the great things about living in Washington D.C. is that there are amazing monuments to spend time with.  The MLK monument is one of those great places. All along the wall of his monuments, there are quotes from MLK giving us insight on how to live our lives.

I thought ,as we continue to look at inspiration as our theme for the month, using a quote from MLK is perfect.  One of my favorite quotes is “The quality, not the longevity, of one’s life is what is important.”

Have you stopped to think about the quality of your life? It starts with the quality of your health.  When you are in pain, or can’t walk up the stairs without getting out of breath, you don’t have quality of life.

When you are too tired to hang out with your girlfriends for happy hour or run around with your kids for 15 minutes, you don’t have quality of life.

All of these scenarios are symptoms that the quality of your health, and thus your life, is not at 100%.

When you take medications for high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes you are treating the symptoms of the disease and not the underlying cause.  This is why your doctor tells you that you have to take them for the rest of your life. Medications might give you longevity but the side effects, or the extra medications to address the side effects, are not worth it.

I don’t know about you, but taking medications for the rest of my life definitely would impact the quality of my life.

So how do you achieve the best quality of life? You have to take charge of your health.

You have to learn simple steps and lifestyles habits that improve the quality and the longevity of your life! How about that for a quote to live by?!

It is possible. Our practice members get success because they are educated and empowered about their health and they make simple changes that improve the quality of their health, which improves the quality of their life.  This is true health.

Are you ready for the quality of life MLK was speaking of?! Say yes!

To Your One Sweet Life,

Dr. Dae
