Balancing your hormones can create harmony with your sleep.

Sleep has been one of the most common complaints from my patients in the last several years. If you have sleep issues, beyond handing the daylight saving time adjustment, you are not alone. There are millions of Americans in your same boat. Most sleep disturbance happen as a result of a hormonal imbalance.  Cortisol, estrogen, insulin and/or melatonin can all contribute to sleep problems.

Most people with sleep issues don’t understand that hormone imbalances are really the underlying cause of their problems.  Here are some things that show up for those with sleep issues:

  • Persistent sleep debt or sleep deprivation causes a weakening of the immune system.  This can cause the body to be more susceptible to diseases, everything from simple colds to cancer.

  • Lack of sleep causes stress and the release of hormones that create imbalances in the body.  Stress and lack of sleep can upset your mental balance leading to irritability, lack of focus, memory loss and an emotional roller coasters of highs and lows.

  • Sleep deprivation can cause increases in insulin resistance, a pre-cursor and underlying cause of diabetes and pre-diabetes.

These problems can lead to weight issues which, in turn, can lead to other health problems. If you are overweight, the excess fat tissue in the area around your ears, nose and throat can cause a problem called sleep apnea.  The excess tissue cuts off the airways causing you to temporarily stop breathing during the night. Over time, this can become dangerous. Being overweight is not the only reason for sleep apnea, but it is one of the biggest.

Restful and restorative sleep is so important. It can change not only your energy levels but so many aspects of your health.

If you are not paying attention to your sleep, it is time that you start!  If you are not getting the sleep your body and mind need, consider changing your habits. If you are ready to improve your sleep, come to our next free dinner seminar on Stress Hormones and Health.
