On Saturday, I was able to attend a one day meditation retreat. The theme for the day came from this beautiful poem called Clearing by Martha Postlewaite. Once we started the day, it was one of the first things the meditation teacher read to us.
Clearing
Do not try to save
the whole world
or do anything grandiose.
Instead, create
a clearing
in the dense forest
of your life
and wait there
patiently,
until the song
that is your life
falls into your own cupped hands
and you recognize and greet it.
Only then will you know
how to give yourself
to this world
so worth of rescue.
Martha Postlewaite
I will be honest with you I am not much of a poetry buff. However, there was something about this poem that really spoke to me as true. I think that it was the gift of taking time out of our sometimes hectic days to just stop and be at peace.
In our busy lives, it is so easy to forget to stop and take time to relax and let our mind and body be at peace. When we are stressed out or exhausted, we do not make good decisions about ourselves or for our lives.
Have you ever had an experience where your life was so busy that you felt exhausted? You wanted to stop but perhaps you didn’t think you had time to just be still for a little while?
Maybe finally your body made a decision for you and you just couldn’t do one more thing or you ended up getting sick. Once you stopped and give yourself permission to rest, did you feel better?
Yes. Once you felt better did you find that your mind came up with new and better solutions to problems for your life?
The poem reminds us that our health begins with creating a clearing in our lives. Creating space in our mind to think differently about how to make our health a priority is the game changer most people miss. By always putting our “life” in front of our health, we cause many of the illnesses we’re faced with today.
The great news is that we can reverse most of these illnesses like obesity, high cholesterol, diabetes, high blood pressure and others, simply by making a clearing in our lives for our health.
If you are ready to make your health a priority, call our office to learn more about how we can help you. We are focused on helping our practice members get their health and lives back.
